The Process
Mailing Intimacy
'Mailing Intimacy' was a submission in the 2024 IESNYC Student Lighting Competition. The 2024 competition theme, Proximal Light, challenges students to construct a 3-dimension study exploring light as a medium to express closeness. As our lives balance in-person experiences with online connections and social networks, how does light help to bridge distances and create an intimate environment for interaction?

Texting, calling, and emailing has made writing letters a lost art. Yet, there is something so special about writing, mailing, and receiving a handwritten letter.
It is the special combination between the excitement of getting a letter, to the recognition of the handwriting on the addressed envelope, to the reading, to the response. Even though it can be weeks between letters there is a strong sense of connection because of the fact that the sender had actually touched it, spent time writing it, and left their personal mark in the form of their unique handwriting.
'Mailing Intimacy' is based on the special and intimate connections obtained through the act of writing, mailing, and receiving letters. Inclosed within the envelopes are letters written and sent by each member of my family to add a sense of collaboration, intimacy, and to emulate the act of writing letters as well as to highlight the uniqueness of each individuals handwriting.
